3 Things Hypnosis Cannot Do
3/7/2024
Hypnosis is a powerful tool for habit change, stress management, and performance—but it isn’t magic. Setting clear expectations keeps you safe, informed, and empowered.
1. Hypnosis cannot diagnose or treat medical or mental-health conditions
Only licensed healthcare providers can diagnose or treat conditions like depression, PTSD, or generalized anxiety disorder. Hypnotists support everyday goals and collaborate with clinicians when appropriate. If you’re experiencing symptoms that feel clinical, please connect with a licensed professional first.
2. Hypnosis cannot “erase” memories or make you act against your values
You remain aware and in control during sessions. Hypnosis strengthens focus and imagination, yet you can always pause, redirect, or stop. Ethical practitioners obtain consent, explain each step, and ensure you feel comfortable the entire time.
3. Hypnosis cannot guarantee specific outcomes
Every person has a unique history, support system, and timeline. A hypnotist can guide you, provide frameworks, and hold you accountable, but progress depends on your practice between sessions and willingness to engage.
When to seek other support
- You need diagnosis, medication, or therapy for clinical conditions.
- You’re in crisis or need immediate safety planning—call emergency services or a helpline.
- You want treatment that falls outside the hypnotist’s scope (for example, addiction rehab or medical weight-loss programs).
Hypnosis fits beautifully alongside coaching, medical care, and other wellness practices. It's most effective when everyone on your care team communicates openly. If you're curious whether your goal aligns with our scope, book a free consult or review the scope of practice.
